Healthy Yards Penfield: June Shadow Pines Report

by Megan Meyer

June was a busy month for our work on the south side of Shadow Pines.  On Wednesday evening, June 4 we led residents through parts of the property to explain the project and share our goals on this multi-year collaborative effort between our town of Penfield and our Healthy Yards Penfield campaign

We identified invasive plants we plan to remove and natives that are currently on the property.

June 17 was planting day for a small number of native plants that included Boneset, Blue Vervain, Stiff Goldenrod, and New England Aster.

Saturday morning, June 21 was our first official work party with residents.  We had an enthusiastic group of 12 that turned out to dig, pull and cut down Teasel, Bull Thistle, Mugwort, Swallow-wort and various small trees from two sites on the property.

Finger Lakes PRISM has photos and ways to remove invasives.

You'll find the Terrestrial Invasive Species starting on page 65 of their Invasive Species Field Guide.
